Hey, little buddies!

One of my favorite quotes comes from Patrick Henry’s famous speech when he said, “Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God. I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!”

When I was a boy, we heard speeches like that quoted a lot.  We read about them in school.  We were inspired by them and it made us want to be patriots like Patrick Henry.  It makes me sad that today many Americans don’t celebrate freedom like we used to.  But you can still grow up to be strong and loyal patriots if you study the true history of American freedom.

One of the best things you can do is to read old books about the War of Independence.  I’ve recorded several books in a series called The Boys of Liberty.  It’s a great bunch of books written over a hundred years ago, when people were much more patriotic than today, and when people always made sure to teach character lessons in books they wrote for young people.  You’ll love the excitement of the stories.  And they will encourage you to be patriotic.

America needs you to grow up to be like Patrick Henry.
