Uncle Rick Audio Book Club Subscription
http://unclerickaudios.com

The “Uncle Rick Audio Book Club” was designed with one simple idea in mind: to bring the best selection of KID-SAFE audiobooks to your home. The idea is that Uncle Rick can serve as a sort of stand-in for mom. While obviously listening to books read by a parent or family member is the most ideal, this website is intended to provide a “second-best” option.

Uncle Rick is that option.

For just $10 a month, you become a member of Uncle’s Rick Audio Club. This membership entitles you to two book downloads each month. These books cover a variety of topics. There are scripture and historical books, adventure stories, and historical fiction just to name a few. In addition, you are also entitled to a 20% discount on all products on the “Character Concepts Site” of their website.

Some other highlights of this membership:

  • You can actually create a “digital audio library” of trusted books. All of your monthly downloads can be copied to your device for easy access and listening.
  • Each month when your membership renews, you receive a personal code via email in order to download your new audio books for that month.
  • Tracking downloads are really easy! Your account holds all your previous purchases in case you need to download it again. (Who hasn’t lost something they previously downloaded in the sea of technology?!)
  • Canceling or pausing your membership is easy to do so there truly is no risk.
  • If you don’t like a book you have downloaded, you can contact Uncle Rick, and they will credit your account! (I love this feature!)

Overall, I think this product provides you exactly what it promises with good customer service to back it up. I did find the website a little challenging to maneuver, however, I do think that as they get going, improvements will continue to be made. In addition, any questions I had were answered promptly via email.

Since all the books are read by the same narrator, you will quickly be able to determine whether this is a good fit for your family and how it is received by your children. I think every parent is anxious to find a way to bring quality literature closer to their home, and the “Uncle Rick Audio Book Club” is a fantastic option.

Uncle Rick Audios from Character Concepts: A Review

by Sandra Modersohn

The kind people at Character Concepts sent us products free of charge in exchange for this review. This post may contain affiliate links.

The Beauty of a Well-Told Story

There is beauty and magic in a well-told story. Fiction writers have the luxury of crafting whatever they need into a tale, but what about real-life stories? As a homeschooler I’m always on the lookout for ways to help make history exciting, interesting, and relevant to our young learners.

Of course, textbooks can be horribly dry and dull, turning many people off to this amazingly diverse subject. There is so much that is fascinating, incredible, improbable, delightful, suspenseful, dramatic, and comical throughout history that it seems almost criminal to distill it all down into a textbook. If you couldn’t tell yet, I’m a big supporter of learning history through real books, written by people (not companies!) who love their subject or who LIVED their subject.

Imagine my delight when I was given the opportunity to sample the readings of Uncle Rick Audios from Character Concepts. Have you had the chance to experience his work?

First of all, he does a fantastic job of choosing interesting subjects written by enthusiastic authors. One of the sets I was privileged to try was Uncle Rick Reads Biographies of Heroes from the American Revolution. In this set, Uncle Rick has chosen four books—written by the amazing Elbridge S. Brooks, who was passionate about creating excellent literature, both historical and fictional, or young people—and he reads them aloud to us.

Our Review

For this review, I had my children listen with me to The True Story of Benjamin Franklin. We were all immediately delighted with the soft, deep voice that introduced this story to us, and we loved the easy way he carried on a conversation as if he were actually sitting there with us. I carefully watched the children as we listened to that first chapter to see if they were reacting the way I was, and sure enough, I frequently caught them smiling and laughing with Uncle Rick as he read the story and chatted a little, adding extra information for us or clearing up confusing words or phrases that the children might not have otherwise understood.

Ben Franklin AudioBook

I think the thing that struck us all was how real Uncle Rick seemed to us as we listened. The best word we can come up with to describe Uncle Rick is “authentic” because it is obvious that this is not a man pretending or acting. He really is a kind uncle interested in sharing great stories with his nieces and nephews. And, Uncle Rick, I can tell you that all the children in my house are eager for your next visit!

Pros:

  • All of the sets we sampled were wonderful stories that were read to us very well.
  • The CD versions are super easy to pop into the car and listen to on the way to anywhere, or for us to sit in the living room and craft while we learn.
  • They also come as MP3s, which is incredibly convenient!
  • Uncle Rick has a beautifully mellow voice that makes the listener want to hear what he has to say.

Cons:

  • I DO wish there were text versions in print that the older kids could follow along with or read on their own. (They are mostly available on Google Books, though!)
  • It would be nice to have some follow-up activity suggestions. However, after asking my kids a few questions it was clear that ollow-ups weren’t necessary to keep the information in their minds. The reading was engaging enough to stick!

What the Children Said

I have five children, ranging in age from 7 months to 10 ½ years. All of them (yep… even the baby!) enjoyed listening.

Josie (10) said: “I really like how he’s talking to us. It’s like he’s really here.”

Katie (10) said: “My favorite part was the story about Benjamin Franklin swimming. The way he told it, I could almost see him in my mind. Now I’m wondering how it could be possible to make a kite pull you along while you swim!”

Sarah (9) said: “It was funny when he started chatting to us and then he said, ‘Let’s get back to the story now.’ You do that all the time, too, Mommy!”

Anna (5) said: “He sounds so nice, like I could snuggle him.”

Jimmy (7 months): He didn’t have much to say, but he tried very hard to talk back to Uncle Rick and to press all the buttons on the CD player!

Your Turn to Invite Uncle Rick Over!

Uncle Rick audio recordings are such a great tool for the homeschooler, though I firmly believe they have a place in every home where great stories are loved. I hope you get the chance to invite Uncle Rick into your home soon. He’d love to read and explain the book of Proverbs, or share about heroic women of the American War for Independence, or any number of other amazing adventures.

Marion’s Men, a downloadable audio book from Uncle Rick’s Audio Book Club, is FREE for HEAV members. Rick Boyer narrates the exciting story of Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox,” and his exploits in the Revolutionary War.

HEAV members get the audio book FREE. If you decide to join Uncle Rick’s Audio Book Club, a portion of your subscription will go to support the work of HEAV![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Attention History and Audiobook Enthusiasts!
Edie Carter – carterchaos-ecarter.blogspot.com

The good folks over at Character Concepts have been so good to us. After finishing my review of their history curriculum America’s Struggle to Become a Nation, they gave us the opportunity to try the Uncle Rick Audio Book Club. You know we love audiobooks so we were all very excited to try it!

Character Concepts offers many CDs and downloads of Uncle Rick reading books of the Bible, historical books, and even holiday fiction. The Uncle Rick Audio Book Club takes that a step further. For $10 per month (as of 10/16/17), your family can enjoy 2 audiobook downloads per month. Right now there are over 60 downloads to pick and new selections are being added.

We’ve been trying the Audio Book Club out for a few months. Around the same date each month, I received an email that a coupon code was added to my account. I could then go and browse the selections to choose our 2 audiobooks for the month. Once I checked out, our downloads were available to save to our computer and enjoy.

Currently, the Audio Book Club offers products in 6 categories: Adventure, Historical Fiction, History, Bible and Character Stories, Scripture, and Holiday. You can view all the selections and enjoy some free sample downloads on their webpage. The downloads vary in length. As Uncle Rick reads these books, he engages the listeners by telling little stories and adding extra information about the story or event in history.

So far, we’ve selected history and holiday books. We’ve all enjoyed listening to Squanto and the Pilgrims by A.M. Anderson , Stories of the Pilgrims for Children by Roland G. Usher, America First Volume 1 by Lawton Evans, and Revolutionary Heroes by James Parton. I just ordered America First Volume 2 by Lawton Evans and Stories of the Great Old West by Theodore Roosevelt. I’m certain they will be just as exciting as the others! While we haven’t tried any of the Bible selections, I think it’d be fantastic to have my kids listen to an audio version of the book of James or the Psalms.

These audiobook downloads are a great way to add more read aloud books to our homeschool time. I don’t always have the time or energy to do read aloud time so these make a lovely substitute. For only $10 a month, this is an excellent deal for adding extra history time for your family. It’s also a wonderful alternative to screen time. Character Concepts offers gift certificates for the Uncle Rick Audio Book Club. Wouldn’t that make an awesome Christmas gift?!?!

Thank you Character Concepts for another fantastic product to review. I hope you will check out their selection of audio books, history curricula, and character curricula. We’ve been impressed with all of the products we have tried from Character Concepts.
